WHAT WE DO

First day

"Every child's first day should be a first class experience."

Mark Tucker, Founder

First Day provides the opportunity for more than 1,000 low-income and at-risk children to begin their school year with confidence and enthusiasm. Our First Day event has a festive atmosphere with lots of games and activities for the whole family. Each registered child that attends the First Day event receives a backpack filled with school supplies, a haircut from a licensed professional, and a new outfit of shirt, pants, and shoes. Each family in attendance receives a bag of non-perishable food items to take home with them after the event.

Game day

AboutKidz believes that every child deserves the opportunity to play organized sports, and that social, emotional, physical, and intellectual skills can be improved through team sports. The Fair Oaks Optimist Club sponsored the 2016 Game Day program and their generous support covered all costs associated with the teams, including: league fees; uniforms; equipment; transportation; snacks; trophies; and, end-of-season team parties. Because of that support, 60 children who otherwise only dreamed of playing on a team, were able to have that dream come true. The AboutKidz coaches and players spend an average of three months together but the impact on the players and their families lasts far beyond the length of the season.

graduation day

Tutoring, life skills development, and a computer lab at the Sayonara Youth Center in Citrus Heights are all part of the Graduation Day program launched in 2016. Each week children from the community look forward to spending time with AboutKidz volunteers and Graduation Day Director Shayne Tucker. We are encouraged by the results we are seeing from the children who attend our Graduation Day program. They have an increased excitement for learning both at home and in the classroom, which has resulted in improving grades and increased school attendance. AboutKidz was selected to received a "GO! Program" grant from the ECMC Foundation to fund the Graduation Day program for one year.

holiday giveaway

The Holiday Giveaway program provides Christmas gifts to families in need. AboutKidz collects new toys through community toy drives, then sorts and individually wraps each gift. In 2015 we helped 125 children and in 2016 we helped 200 children.
