First day

"Every child's first day should be a first class experience."

Mark Tucker, Founder

First Day provides the opportunity for more than 1,000 low-income and at-risk children to begin their school year with confidence and enthusiasm. Our First Day event has a festive atmosphere with lots of games and activities for the whole family. Each registered child that attends the First Day event receives a backpack filled with school supplies, a haircut from a licensed professional, and a new outfit of shirt, pants, and shoes. Each family in attendance receives a bag of non-perishable food items to take home with them after the event.

Game day

AboutKidz believes that every child deserves the opportunity to play organized sports, and that social, emotional, physical, and intellectual skills can be improved through team sports. The Country Club Optimist Club continued to sponsor the Game Day program in 2017. Their generous support covered all costs associated with the teams, including: league fees, uniforms, equipment, transportation, snacks, trophies, and the end-of-season team parties. Because of that support, 60 children who otherwise only dreamed of playing on a team, were able to have that dream come true. The AboutKidz coaches and players spend an average of three months together but the impact on the players and their families lasts far beyond the length of the season.

graduation day

AboutKidz was selected to receive a "GO! Program" grant from the ECMC Foundation to launch the Graduation Day program. During the first two years of the program, AboutKidz volunteers extended the hours of the Sayonara Center after school program for tutoring. For the 2018-19 school year, AboutKidz is partnering with the San Juan Unified School District to launch a brand new after school tutoring program at Northridge Elementary. Free tutoring is provided for two hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays right on campus to help students reach their academic goals. Our team of volunteer tutors consists of retired educators, college graduates who are aspiring to be educators, and high school students - all wanting to give back to their community.

holiday giveaway

The Holiday Giveaway program provides Christmas gifts to families in need. AboutKidz collects new toys through community toy drives and donations. Volunteers then sort and individually wrap each child's gift. Over the past three years we have been able to support numerous local children during the holiday season: 125 children in 2015, 200 children in 2016, and over 280 children in 2017.
